A Collaborative Approach to Building Coles Express Bremer Service Station
SwitchCo was engaged by Coles Supermarkets to manage the planning, design, construction, and opening of a new service station within a Coles supermarket car park. Facing challenges, including local council requirements clashing with Shell’s standards for the canopy profile, SwitchCo facilitated significant consultations to reach an agreement. Additionally, SwitchCo informed the local council about the importance of a Class 1 Full Retention Oil Water Separator to mitigate hydrocarbon risks. These solutions allowed the project to move forward, and the new service station opened on time and on budget.

SwitchCo was the client-side project manager representing Andrew Doman, the strategic lead, owner and investor for the Yadlamalka Energy Vanadium Flow Battery (VFB) Storage and Solar Farm project in South Australia.
The Yadlamalka Energy Storage Project aimed to create a large-scale solar farm and battery storage. Yadlamalka Land Pty Ltd engaged SwitchCo, through Birdwood Energy, for project management and owner’s engineering roles. This included detailed planning, procurement management, grid connection, and overseeing project execution and completion, all adhering to SAPN and ARENA standards.

Ampol Cabramatta’s UPSS Reline Achieved with Precision and Speed
SwitchCo was engaged by Ampol to manage the reline of underground tanks, pipework replacement, and new pavement at its Cabramatta service station, with the site remaining operational throughout. Careful planning allowed work to proceed in stages, balancing operational needs and safety, with groundwater managed carefully during tank uncovering. The project was completed early and under budget, with Ampol impressed by SwitchCo’s approach and comprehensive communication.

Transforming Yarraville: Bradmills Site Remediation
Senversa engaged SwitchCo to superintend the remediation of a contaminated industrial site in Yarraville, which included addressing soil contamination and asbestos removal. Prolonged wet weather and unexpected contamination levels presented challenges. SwitchCo implemented adaptive strategies, including revised material handling and detailed assessments, allowing the project to progress sucessfully against great challenges, with successful risk mitigation strategies implemented. The successful remediation prepared the site for its future transformation into a sustainable community space.

SwitchCo was engaged by CFA to manage the environmental rehabilitation at the Fiskville Training Campus, closed due to PFAS contamination. Starting in 2018, the project included demolition, civil earthworks, water treatment, and waste removal. SwitchCo’s role included contract administration, budget management, and problem-solving. Facing regulatory challenges on a project defining industry standards, SwitchCo coordinated closely with EPA and other stakeholders, ensuring all roles were completed on time and overcoming weather impacts, ultimately establishing SwitchCo as a trusted partner for CFA.

BP’s Dealer and Distribution Rebrand Delivered with Efficiency and Expertise
SwitchCo were engaged in 2021 to assist with BP’s annual rebranding program across both the dealer and distributor networks nationally. Following commencement, SwitchCo identified a need for improved processes to manage the high volume of projects and address gaps in understanding between contractors and BP stakeholders. SwitchCo developed a MID engineering process, consulting BP stakeholders and training BP managers and subcontractors to adhere to this process, along with implementing a meeting matrix to ensure consistent communication. This approach led to the successful delivery of the 2023 Annual Program on time and budget, with BP recognising the value of SwitchCo’s approach and continuing engagement.

Execution of berthing and infrastructure project for new vessels.
SwitchCo managed the Berthing and Infrastructure Project at Webb Dock East, Melbourne, for the new larger Toll vessels. The project involved quayside strenghtening, concrete dolphins, fendering, seabed dredging, and a new RoRo ramp. Managing latent conditions and environmental factors posed significant challenges. Through innovative design oversite and stakeholder engagement, SwitchCo successfully delivered the project on time and safely, overcoming numerous high-risk activities.

Delivering a Seamless Starbucks Drive-Thru Experience at Chirnside Park
SwitchCo was engaged to plan, design manage, and project manage the build of a new Starbucks drive-thru on an operational 7-Eleven site. The project required SwitchCo to navigate sewer connections, subgrade issues, and traffic management while maintaining minimal disruption to 7-Eleven. SwitchCo coordinated around a critical 3-day electrical shutdown, incorporating clever drainage design and delivering the project on time. With the purchase of two new ships to service the route between Tasmania and mainland Australia already completed, Toll Shipping engaged SwitchCo to manage the procurement and construction works at Burnie Wharf. Expanding NT’s Renewable Energy Capacity with Batchelor Solar Farm
SwitchCo was engaged to manage the design, construction, and commissioning of a 10MW grid-connected solar farm in Batchelor, NT, as part of the NT Government’s renewable energy strategy. Beginning during COVID-19, travel restrictions challenged site access, requiring adaptive project management. SwitchCo coordinated remotely, managing delays and costs effectively. The farm is now exporting 5MW into the grid, achieving an interim dispatch and demonstrating SwitchCo’s strong project stakeholder management, with more on the way as commissioning draws to a close.

Launched at the start of COVID-19, the project encountered logistical difficulties, especially with border closures impacting travel. SwitchCo provided technical advice, HSEQ oversight, and project delivery expertise, ensuring high-quality design and construction under tight timelines and COVID-19 restrictions. The use of Procore software enabled efficient project management and successful issue resolution.

Viva Energy was looking to enhance the offering available at Hexham by installing a new truck canopy and executing a pump replacement project.
Viva Energy needed to upgrade the truck canopy at Hexham and replace pumps at both truck and car canopies, decommission the LPG offering, and install a new oil-water separator. The main challenge was minimising disruption during the 6-week construction, achieved by SwitchCo’s effective planning, limiting truck canopy downtime to 2 weeks. SwitchCo’s comprehensive involvement in design, planning, and on-site supervision ensured project success and customer satisfaction, effectively addressing issues throughout.

TT-Line engaged SwitchCo to oversee the spirit of Tasmania terminal relocation from Melbourne to Geelong.
SwitchCo joined the project six months in to represent TT-Line, aligning interests with GeelongPort’s management and ensuring timely, budget-compliant delivery. The state-of-the-art Geelong terminal features Automated Mooring Units and a unique three-level ramp for faster boarding. Faced with a tight timeline and unexpected communication and security scope, SwitchCo helped to successfully transition the shipping terminal facility from a construction site to fully operational, ensuring the terminal’s successful operation and timely first sailing.

SwitchCo managed a $10M upgrade of Toll’s Burnie terminal, including increased reefer freight capacity, electrical infrastructure upgrades, and new canopy and lighting towers. The challenge was maintaining schedule amidst testing ground conditions and ensuring live site operations continued smoothly. Effective communication and planning ensured timely completion without impeding Toll’s operations.

SwitchCo delivered a $45M upgrade at Toll’s Webb Dock terminal, including extensive pavement works, terminal infrastructure construction, and electrical services installation. Taking over mid-project, SwitchCo refocused efforts, solving design challenges and managing stakeholder communication to ensure timely approvals and budget adherence, achieving a successful project outcome.

SwitchCo were engaged to manage the set-up of the sorting facility and the regional consolidation facility for Cleanaway as part of the Victorian container deposit scheme.
The Victorian Container Deposit Scheme (CDS), launched on 1 November 2023, incentivises recycling with refunds. Cleanaway, partnering with TOMRA, engaged SwitchCo to set up the sorting facility and regional consolidation facility. Despite a tight 9-month timeline and site constraints, SwitchCo identified procurement needs and developed a contingency plan using existing Cleanaway sites. This approach saved costs and ensured the project’s success, with 800,000 containers collected on the first day and a new Truck Parking facility in Ballarat.
